Bunion Therapy: A Non-Surgical Approach

A little knowledge and 5 minutes of focused, self-care could go a long way toward easing bunion pain and help to straighten that big toe.  On this page you will find two self-care resources:
(1)  A two-step, massage and exercise treatment plan (DRAFT).
(2)  A self-massage video from YouTube.

Step 1
Massage your ADductor Hallucis, (Fig 1).
This muscle (muscle group) pulls the big toe toward your second toe when it contracts (shortens), and for people with bunions, this muscle is perpetually "short".

Step 2
Strengthen your ABductor Hallucis, (Fig 2).
With the Adductor Hallucis (Fig 1) loosened up (Step 1), exercise the ABductor Hallucis, get it to contract, which moves the toe in the opposite direction (Fig 2). How?  Have a toe war... feet together, press your big toes toward each other - work them, strengthen them, bring your big toes back into alignment.
